Nantucket, MA July 14th-24th the fishing on Nantucket over the past week and a half has been lacking variety.  The weekend of the 15/16/17 we spent three days offshore to the south of the island in search of Tuna. The first day was the most promising… armed with fly poles and light spin gear we threw at fish on top for most of the morning. We finally hooked a tuna fish around 11am, just to pull the hook 20 minutes later. The next two days we were plagued with fog. The week following offered tons of blues(6#-14#) on the south side and a handful of bones(4#-7#) as well. All of the east tide trips caught a bonito or two. The bait on the bar seems very thick, though the water temp has been inconsistent.  Thursday morning Dick Dupont and I made the run east to search for Bass. We found 62 degree water and a handful bass(4#-15#) and a bunch of blues. The combination of fog and a slow tide may have slowed the fish, though the water was warm. This coming week we have an east tide in the morning and look forward to the Bonito fishing heating up…

Nantucket, MA July 1-13 2006 We are currently in a transition period here on nantucket. The bass fishing has slowed down considerably and the focus is now on Tuna and Bonito. Though I have had some early success with the faster fish it has been almost two weeks since I have caught a tuna fish. My attention is now focused on finning blues by the thousands and fishing for bonito. I have been spending the morning east tide fishing for bones in there usual spots. The bait seems to be thick and deep both offshore and inshore. The Blues have found it with a few bonito mixed in. On July 11th I had a young lady on the boat and she landed an 11 pound bonito. The fish measured almost 30 inches in length. This was the only bonito taken that day, though we had several other shots at fish. She caught that bone in 12 feet of water on a yo-zuri swimming plug. Word has it a push tune fish is on the way, just a matter of time until they find the mother load of sand eels and squid which is abundant around the island at this time...
Nantucket, MA June 2006 Here is my first attempt at putting together a weekly or bi-weekly fishing report. For the first report I'm going to include the whole month of June. From the beginning of the month on we have dealt with harsh weather and strong winds. We here on Nantucket have a unique situation in that our island is basically round giving us the opportunity to always be able to fish behind the cover of land. With that being said our prevailing South-West wind had us on the North shore for the first 2 weeks of the month. The blue fishing continued to be consistent and the bass slowly made a steady arrival. The second week of June gave us some good rip fishing for bass, while the squid took a hit. Big flies and heavy lines produced fish up to 30#. The third week of June the blues became thick on the south side and we spent the majority of our time throwing flies at finning blues in the afternoon. The AM fishing for bass was red hot, usual trips catching between 30-50 bass between 15-38#. The bass were feeding buffett style, primarily chewing on squid, herring, bluefish and sea-robins. Those sea-robins make a great treaser bait for 30 plus pound bass. Surface lures like the ballistic missile and pencil popper proved very effective, though anything would have worked. The last week of the month brought us some new friends to play with. On the 27th I fished to east tide in the morning and to my surprise found a load a tuna fish jumping. That morning we went 3 for 5 with the fish weighing 37-42#. The next morning we went out and again were able to find a bunch of jumping tuna. My crew went 5 for 9 with the largest fish weighing 48#. We were also able to capture 3 bonito in the process. Very exciting stuff for the end of June. I can only imagine what the month of July is going to bring....
